The Government of Tanzania has praised Hungary for deepening diplomatic and economic ties, particularly through support for water and social development projects.

The remarks were made by Dr. Natu El-Maamry Mwamba,Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Finance, during a meeting with Hungary’s Acting Ambassador to Tanzania, Mr. David Tòth, at the Ministry of Finance offices in Dodoma.

Dr. Mwamba commended Hungary for its growing engagement with Tanzania, highlighting the recent opening of Hungary’s diplomatic office in Dar es Salaam as a strong signal of the country’s commitment to bilateral relations.

He noted that Hungary’s support for development projects, including the Biharamulo Water Project in Kagera Region, aligns closely with Tanzania’s national priorities under the Third Five-Year Development Plan (2021/22–2025/26) and the country’s 2050 Development Vision.

“The Biharamulo project will improve access to clean water for residents of Biharamulo and surrounding areas while boosting social and economic development,” Dr. Mwamba said.

He also urged expanding the current financial cooperation framework to include grant support for key social and economic initiatives, alongside the existing concessional loans.

“We value Hungary’s concessional loans, but widening the framework to include grants for priority sectors such as social services, infrastructure, and economic development will strengthen our partnership and benefit citizens in both countries,” he added.

Ambassador Tòth reaffirmed Hungary’s commitment to supporting Tanzania’s development agenda. He said the Biharamulo project is a model of partnership that directly improves citizens’ lives.

“Hungary considers Tanzania an important development partner in Africa. We are dedicated to projects that positively impact communities, such as the Biharamulo Water Project, which will expand access to safe and clean water in Kagera,” Mr. Tòth said.

The meeting was attended by senior officials from the Ministry of Finance and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and East African Cooperation, including Deputy Permanent Secretary Ms. Amina Khamis Shaaban, policy analyst Dr. Remidius Ruhinduka, and Hungary’s Water Project Specialist Mr. Szabolcs Nagy.
