The government is strengthening efforts to turn agriculture into a reliable source of employment and income through a nationwide skills development programme that has reached 849 farmers and small-scale agro-processors in four regions.
Implemented by the Prime Minister’s Office – Labour, Employment and Industrial Relations, the initiative targets improved productivity, value addition and market access, particularly in tomato and nutrient-rich spinach value chains. The latest training session was conducted on January 19, 2026, in Iringa Municipality.
Speaking during the training, Acting Assistant Director for Employment Promotion, Mr Godwin Mpelumbe, said the programme is part of a broader policy shift to position agriculture as a driver of decent jobs and inclusive economic growth.
“By equipping farmers and processors with modern skills, the government is enabling agriculture to move beyond subsistence and become a viable business that creates jobs and raises incomes,” Mr Mpelumbe said.
He noted that since the programme’s launch, beneficiaries from Dodoma, Singida, Mbeya and Iringa have gained practical skills to improve yields, manage production risks and add value to their produce, enabling them to compete more effectively in the market.
Mr Mpelumbe credited President Samia Suluhu Hassan for prioritising skills development and employment creation, saying the allocation of funds for farmer training reflects the government’s commitment to empowering citizens and strengthening local economies.
Technical sessions were delivered by experts from the Tanzania Agricultural Research Institute (TARI), who trained participants on climate-smart farming practices, disease management and value addition techniques aimed at improving quality and profitability.
One of the beneficiaries, Ms Sophia Dominick, said the training had changed how farmers view agriculture, highlighting the importance of knowledge, technology and processing in increasing returns.
“The practical sessions and exposure visits showed us how value addition can create more jobs and higher incomes. We are now better equipped to improve production and expand our agribusinesses,” she said.
The Prime Minister’s Office continues to roll out the programme across the country to enhance skills, boost productivity and support the creation of sustainable employment through agriculture-led growth.
