Prime Minister to represent President Samia at late Edwin Mtei’s funeral

Prime Minister Dr. Mwigulu Nchemba arrived today, January 24, 2026, at Kilimanjaro International Airport (KIA), to represent President Her Excellency Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan at the funeral of the late Mr. Edwin Mtei in Tengeru, Arusha.

Mr. Edwin Mtei, who passed away on the night of January 19, 2026, in Arusha, was the first Governor of the Bank of Tanzania (BoT), serving from 1966 to 1974. 

He played a pivotal role in laying the foundation for the country’s financial systems during the early years of independence.

During his tenure, Mtei was instrumental in establishing robust mechanisms for economic management, currency regulation, and financial oversight, which continue to influence Tanzania’s banking and economic policies today. 


His work helped stabilize the national currency and strengthen the central bank’s role in the country’s development.

Officials at the funeral described him as a visionary leader whose legacy extends beyond the BoT, noting his contribution to shaping Tanzania’s post-independence economic framework.

Prime Minister Dr. Nchemba’s presence underscores the government’s respect and recognition of Mtei’s enduring impact on Tanzania’s economy and governance.

The funeral in Tengeru is attended by family, government officials, former colleagues, and members of the public, reflecting the widespread esteem in which Mr. Mtei was held.
