Peramiho election officials urged to work closely with political parties

By Our Reporter, Iringa

Election officials in Peramiho have been called upon to closely involve fully registered political parties at every stage of the electoral process to ensure smooth and credible elections.

The call was made today, January 24, 2026, by the Chairperson of the National Electoral Commission, Judge of the Court of Appeal, Jacobs Mwambegele, during the opening of a three-day training for election officials from Songea District Council in Ruvuma Region and Mbozi District Council in Songwe Region.

The training comes ahead of the by-election in Peramiho Constituency, Songea District, and Shiwinga Ward, Mbozi District, scheduled for February 26, 2026.

“Throughout this election process, it is vital to engage all fully registered political parties and other stakeholders on electoral matters they are entitled to. Doing so will make it easier for officials to perform their duties effectively,” Judge Mwambegele said.

He emphasized that officials must follow the laws, regulations, and directives from the Commission rather than relying on past practices.

“Experience is valuable, but every election is unique. Adhere to the instructions you are given instead of working out of habit,” he added.

The Chairperson also urged early inspections of polling stations to identify special requirements and ensure proper arrangements that guarantee peaceful and orderly voting.

Officials were reminded to recruit polling staff who are professional, impartial, and qualified, avoiding favoritism toward relatives or friends lacking the necessary skills.

“Check all election materials received from the Commission and make sure every polling station has everything it needs in advance. Each station must be ready to open by 7:00 AM,” Judge Mwambegele said.

Participants also took oaths to uphold political neutrality and maintain confidentiality in the presence of the Resident Judge of Iringa Region, Rehema Mayagilo.

The training brought together regional election coordinators, constituency and ward-level supervisors, election officers, procurement officers, and accountants, equipping them with the skills and knowledge needed for a credible electoral process.
