President of the United Republic of Tanzania, Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan, has conveyed her heartfelt condolences following the death of Mr. Edwin Isaac Mbilewi Mtei, who passed away on the night of January 19, 2026, in Arusha.
“On behalf of the Government of the United Republic of Tanzania and on my own behalf, I extend my deepest condolences to the family, relatives, friends, colleagues, and all those affected by this great loss,” President Samia said.
The President described the late Mtei as a devoted civil servant and leader who made significant contributions to the country’s development, particularly in finance, planning, and economic management.
He notably served as the first Governor of the Bank of Tanzania from 1966 to 1974, helping lay the foundation for the nation’s financial policies and institutions.
President Samia also highlighted Mtei’s role in Tanzanian politics and party development, recognizing him as a pioneer of democracy and political pluralism.
He played a key role in the formation of the Chama cha Demokrasia na Maendeleo (CHADEMA) party.
“His legacy will continue to inspire both current and future generations, especially through his writings and personal accounts that reflect his journey of public service and dedication to nation-building,” President Samia said.
She prayed for comfort, strength, and peace for Mtei’s family, relatives, and all mourners, asking the Almighty to grant him eternal rest in a place of peace.
