The Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) has reiterated its firm opposition to any foreign interference in the internal affairs of Somalia, while renewing calls for decisive international action against Israel over what it described as continued violations of international law.
Speaking during an Extraordinary Meeting of the OIC Council of Foreign Ministers in Jeddah on January 10, 2026, the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates of the State of Palestine, Dr Varsen Aghabekian Shahin, stressed the need to safeguard Somalia’s unity and territorial integrity as recognised under international law.
Dr Shahin condemned what she termed Israeli interference in the internal affairs of the Federal Republic of Somalia, warning that such actions risk destabilising the Horn of Africa and undermining prospects for peace in the wider region.
She linked Israel’s conduct in Somalia to what she described as a broader colonial approach, arguing that continuous provocations are designed to derail peace efforts, while Israel continues its aggression against the Palestinian people and attempts to forcibly displace them.
Addressing the meeting, Dr Shahin expressed appreciation to President Mahmoud Abbas, the Palestinian leadership and people for their steadfastness, as well as to Saudi Arabia’s leadership for its unwavering support of the Palestinian cause.
She singled out the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud for their continued backing.
The Palestinian minister called on OIC member states to adopt punitive measures against Israel, citing violations of international law, disregard for the United Nations Charter and failure to comply with international legal rulings.
She also strongly criticised a recent visit by the Israeli foreign minister to what she referred to as “Somaliland,” describing the move as a provocative incursion aimed at legitimising occupation and improving Israel’s international image.
Dr Shahin urged OIC member states to fully implement resolutions adopted at previous summits, including boycott measures, refraining from establishing or maintaining relations with Israel, and opposing any Israeli nominations within international organisations.
The meeting, convened to discuss developments concerning Somalia, underscored the OIC’s position on defending the sovereignty of member states and maintaining a unified stance on the Palestinian question.
