Zanzibar President and Chairman of the Revolutionary Council, Dr. Hussein Ali Mwinyi, on January 13, 2026, officially launched the Gombani Sports Complex in Chake Chake District, South Pemba Region, in a move aimed at expanding access to modern sports facilities and strengthening community development.

The launch was marked by the final match of the 2026 NMB Mapinduzi Cup, featuring Tanzania’s leading football clubs, Azam FC and Young Africans SC (Yanga).

The match attracted thousands of football fans from across Zanzibar and beyond, providing residents with an opportunity to enjoy top-level football while celebrating a major national event.

The Gombani Stadium has undergone extensive rehabilitation works implemented by Reform Sports Company.

The project included the upgrading of the main football stadium, the construction of the Chake Chake District Stadium, and the development of facilities for other sports such as handball, volleyball, and basketball around the main stadium.

These improvements are expected to benefit local youth, sports clubs, and schools by providing safe and accessible spaces for training, competitions, and recreation.

Speaking during the event, President Dr. Mwinyi said the government continues to prioritize investments that directly improve the well-being of citizens.

He noted that the Gombani Sports Complex will help nurture young talent, promote healthy lifestyles, create opportunities for social interaction, and contribute to local economic activities through sports-related events.

The launch of the Gombani Sports Complex is part of the celebrations marking the 62nd anniversary of the Zanzibar Revolution, reflecting the government’s commitment to inclusive development that places citizens at the center of national progress.
