Members of the Tanzanian Parliament from the Standing Committee on Industry, Trade, Agriculture, and Livestock have received a two-day seminar on the roles and operations of the Ministry of Livestock and Fisheries and its agencies.

The seminar, which began on January 19 at the Parliament in Dodoma, aims to increase MPs’ understanding of ongoing projects and reforms in the livestock and fisheries sectors.

Following the seminar, Committee Chair Deudatus Mwanyika urged the government to accelerate the establishment of a national fisheries authority

He said the authority would strengthen fisheries management, enhance economic productivity, and improve food security through better livestock feed production.

“We request that the process of establishing the fisheries authority be fast-tracked, as current management challenges remain. The issue of feed production also needs urgent attention,” Mwanyika said.

Addressing MPs, Minister of Livestock and Fisheries, Ambassador Dr. Bashiru Ally Kakurwa, highlighted progress in the fisheries sector, including the construction of a fishing port, which is 90 percent complete and expected to be handed over by March 31, 2026.

Dr. Kakurwa added that upon completion of the port, the government under President Samia Suluhu Hassan will purchase two deep-sea fishing vessels, contributing to the government’s goal of operating five national fishing vessels.

The seminar will continue on January 20 at the parliamentary grounds, providing further insights into sectoral reforms and anticipated developments.
