Deputy Minister of Finance, Laurent Luswetula, has encouraged Tanzanians to explore the country’s natural attractions as part of efforts to boost domestic tourism and increase national revenue.

Speaking in Tanga City during his visit to the Amboni Caves Reserve, Luswetula said the site is one of Tanzania’s unique natural treasures that deserves greater attention from both local and international visitors.

He noted that promoting domestic tourism can stimulate economic growth, create employment opportunities, and strengthen citizens’ appreciation of the nation’s heritage.

“The Amboni Caves are a rare gift blessed to our country. They hold extraordinary natural features that Tanzanians and foreign tourists alike should experience,” he said.

The Amboni Caves Reserve, which is under the management of the Ngorongoro Conservation Area Authority, is known for its rich geological formations and historical significance.

The Reserve Warden, Mr. Ramadhan Rashid, and Tour Guide, Mr. Muhsin Rajabu, said the caves carry important stories linked to Tanzania’s geography and the history of freedom fighters.

They added that improvements have been made to the site’s infrastructure to enhance the comfort and safety of visitors.

Beyond the caves, the reserve is also home to forest and aquatic wildlife, including crocodiles found in the nearby Mkurumuzi River.

Located about eight kilometres north of Tanga City, the Amboni Caves are estimated to be more than 150 years old.

The reserve covers approximately 39.5 acres and sits 755 metres above sea level. Studies further suggest that the area was submerged under water nearly 20 million years ago, highlighting its scientific and historical value.

In a separate engagement, Luswetula visited the Mangrove Forest Reserve in Tanga, where he praised the Tanzania Forest Services Agency (TFS) for its innovative approach in turning the reserve into a key economic and tourism asset.

He commended the agency’s efforts to balance environmental conservation with income generation, noting that sustainable tourism plays a crucial role in protecting natural resources while supporting national development.

Hon. Luswetula reaffirmed the government’s commitment to promoting tourism as a strategic sector for economic growth, urging citizens to take pride in and actively promote Tanzania’s diverse tourist attractions.
