The Tanzanian government is stepping up efforts to accelerate the completion of development projects through the implementation of comprehensive Monitoring and Evaluation (M&E) Guidelines, a move aimed at improving efficiency, accountability, and results for citizens.
Speaking at a workshop in Iringa for directors, planning officers, and heads of M&E units from Local Government Authorities (LGAs), Dr. James Henry Kilabuko, Deputy Permanent Secretary of the Prime Minister’s Office for Policy, Parliament, Coordination, and Persons with Disabilities, said the initiative is part of the government’s commitment to ensure timely delivery of services and projects. He was speaking on behalf of Dr. Jim Yonazi, Permanent Secretary of the office.
"The Integrated M&E Guidelines, issued in June 2024, provide clear and standardized procedures that allow the government to track, evaluate, and measure the performance of all institutions using the 'Whole of Government Approach'," Dr. Kilabuko explained.
He noted that the workshop supports the directives of the Sixth Phase Government under the leadership of President Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan, aiming to strengthen performance management, enhance accountability, and ensure that development projects directly benefit citizens.
Dr. Kilabuko urged directors of LGAs to ensure that M&E units, established in April 2024, are fully equipped with adequate staff, funding, and support from all departments.
Planning officers were also called upon to align their plans with M&E indicators from the earliest stages to guarantee that projects deliver the intended results.
He concluded by encouraging participants to make productive use of the workshop, build networks, and leverage government support to achieve efficient service delivery and lasting development outcomes for citizens.
