The government has unveiled a strategy to strengthen the Magena Livestock Market, located at the border, aiming to expand livestock trade and simplify the movement of animals to neighboring countries.
Deputy Minister of Livestock and Fisheries, Kamani, shared the details on January 29, 2026, in Dodoma while responding to a question from Tarime Town MP, Esther Matiko, who inquired about the government’s plan to develop the market.
“In our efforts to improve the market, the government has invested in critical infrastructure. During the 2021/2022 financial year, TZS 175.65 million was allocated to build animal pens, loading ramps, water troughs, and toilets, all of which are now complete,” Kamani said.
Despite these improvements, the Magena Market has not reached its full potential due to challenges such as illegal livestock smuggling to neighboring countries, which reduces the number of animals brought to the market.
To address this, the ministry, in partnership with the Prime Minister’s Office for Regional Administration and Local Government (PO-RALG), is educating and encouraging stakeholders to use the market as intended while strengthening measures to curb smuggling.
Kamani also noted that the government is supporting seaweed farmers to maximize benefits from their produce by providing training and encouraging the formation of groups, enabling faster access to markets.
