Government launches strategy to expand grazing areas nationwide

The government has unveiled a five-year strategy aimed at expanding land for livestock activities, a move expected to strengthen Tanzania’s livestock sector and support pastoral communities.

Under the plan, 2.51 million hectares will be designated for grazing, raising the total surveyed and allocated land from 3.49 million hectares to six million hectares.

This initiative aligns with the Chama cha Mapinduzi (CCM) 2025–2030 manifesto and President Samia Suluhu Hassan’s pledge during the opening of the 13th Parliament on November 14, 2025.

Deputy Minister of Livestock and Fisheries, Ng’wasi Kamani, announced the strategy today, January 28, 2026, in Dodoma while responding to a question from Ngorongoro MP, Yannick Ikayo Ndoinyo, on government plans to increase grazing land.

“Mr. Speaker, the Ministry of Livestock and Fisheries, together with relevant institutions responsible for land planning and management, has started implementing a five-year plan to set aside 2.51 million hectares for livestock activities. Parliament will be actively involved throughout this process,” Kamani said.

He added that the ministry will continue to educate farmers nationwide on climate change and livestock protection through media campaigns. To ease feed shortages, the government has also reduced the price of pasture seeds from TZS 4,000 per kilogram to TZS 1,000, offering much-needed relief to pastoralists across the country.

The strategy is expected to boost livestock productivity, enhance food security, and support Tanzania’s long-term agricultural development.
