A wave of suspicion has hit CHADEMA’s campaign operations in Arusha after police announced the arrest of Fredrick Mbwambo, a party member accused of embezzling funds collected from citizens for the “Funga Mwaka na Tundu Lissu” campaign supporting party chairman Tundu Lissu.
Authorities say the alleged scheme involved transferring donations through two mobile numbers linked to different telecommunications companies, including one from a foreign network.
The complaint that triggered the arrest came from Alute Mughwai, who noticed irregularities in the handling of the campaign contributions.
Arusha Regional Police Commander, Assistant Commissioner Justine Masejo, emphasized that investigations are ongoing.
“A case file has been officially opened, and we are following leads to identify other potential suspects and gather evidence to ensure accountability,” he said.
The incident raises questions about oversight and transparency in political fundraising, highlighting the need for stricter mechanisms to protect citizen contributions and maintain trust in party campaigns.
