The Governor of the Bank of Tanzania (BoT), Mr. Emmanuel Tutuba, on January 23, 2026, visited the residence of the late Edwin Mtei in Arusha to convey condolences to the bereaved family following the passing of Tanzania’s first Central Bank Governor.
Mr. Mtei, who served as BoT Governor from 1966 to 1974, was hailed by Governor Tutuba as a central figure in the establishment and early development of the Bank of Tanzania, laying foundations that continue to shape the country’s financial system to this day.
Speaking during the visit, Governor Tutuba said the late Mtei played a pivotal role in designing strong frameworks for national economic management, overseeing the regulation of the Tanzanian Shilling, and spearheading the development of payment systems that enhanced stability and efficiency within the financial sector.
He noted that the institutional structures and policy principles introduced under Mr. Mtei’s leadership have remained instrumental in guiding the Central Bank’s mandate of ensuring monetary stability, safeguarding the financial system, and supporting sustainable economic growth.
Governor Tutuba added that Tanzania will continue to honour the legacy of the late Edwin Mtei, recognizing his enduring contribution to the country’s economic architecture and national development.
