Tanzania promotes Great Wildebeest Migration at FITUR Tourism Fair in Spain

Tanzania is showcasing its iconic tourism attractions at the ongoing FITUR International Tourism Fair in Spain, with the world-renowned Great Wildebeest Migration drawing strong interest from international visitors.

Through the Ministry of Natural Resources and Tourism and its agencies, the country is highlighting the unique ecological spectacle in which millions of wildebeests migrate annually between Ngorongoro and Serengeti.

Visitors to the Tanzania pavilion have expressed particular fascination with the synchronized calving season that takes place in the Ndutu Plains.

Senior Assistant Commissioner for Tourism and Marketing at the Ngorongoro Conservation Area Authority (NCAA), Mariam Kobelo, told guests that the migration is one of the most extraordinary natural events globally, both in scale and scientific significance.

She explained that between December and March each year, female wildebeests give birth almost simultaneously in Ndutu, an area that offers optimal conditions for newborn calves.

The region provides secure habitats, ample pasture, reliable water sources, favorable climate, and rich nutrients that support rapid early growth.

“The Ndutu ecosystem is uniquely suited for calving. The mineral-rich soil enhances the nutritional value of the mothers’ milk, which is essential for healthy bone development and overall survival of the calves,” Kobelo said.

She added that the relatively low presence of predators in the area during the calving period further improves survival rates, reinforcing Ndutu’s role as a critical breeding ground within the greater Serengeti ecosystem.

Beyond the Great Migration, Tanzania is also using the FITUR platform to promote lesser-known but high-potential attractions, including Mount Loolmalasin, Elephant Caves, Endoro Waterfalls, Engaruka archaeological site, Mumba Shelter Rocks, the Mbozi Meteorite, and the Ngorongoro–Lengai Geopark.

The exhibition also provided an opportunity for engagement with Tanzania’s diplomatic representatives abroad.

Ms. Eva Mashala, an official from the Tanzania Embassy in France, commended the Ministry and its institutions for their strategic efforts to market Tanzania’s tourism internationally, noting that sustained promotion is key to increasing visitor numbers and strengthening national revenue.

Commissioner Kobelo attended the event alongside Tourism Officer Mr. Yohana Nkwamah as part of Tanzania’s official delegation.
