The National Sports Council (BMT) has engaged the National Insurance Corporation (NIC) and former athletes in discussions to establish a dedicated funeral insurance scheme for sportspeople in Tanzania. The initiative aims to strengthen the welfare and dignity of both active and retired athletes.
During the meeting, BMT Senior Officer Charles Maguzu explained that the program is designed to help athletes manage financial and social challenges that arise when close relatives, including children, siblings, or other family members, pass away a burden that has often been particularly heavy for retired athletes.
“Many athletes lack insurance coverage after retirement, leaving them vulnerable during times of bereavement. This initiative seeks to provide a sustainable program that ensures security and dignity for athletes, even after their careers end,” Maguzu said.
He added that the proposed scheme would consider the financial capacity and living circumstances of athletes. Stakeholders’ input is being collected to ensure the program is practical, accessible, and tailored to athletes’ needs.
“Our goal is to make sure athletes receive the support they deserve during difficult times. Funeral insurance is a critical tool in protecting the welfare of athletes and their families,” he emphasized.
Former athletes present at the meeting, led by the Chairman of the Tanzania Veterans Association (UMSOTA), Faza Lusozi, shared their experiences and challenges faced after retirement, particularly during bereavements.
They praised BMT for involving them directly in planning for their welfare and future security.
The initiative forms part of BMT’s wider strategy to improve the lives of athletes in Tanzania. It seeks to build a reliable social protection system that respects and supports sportspeople before, during, and after their careers, while reinforcing their contributions to the development of national sports.
