Zanzibar Athletics gears up for global competitions

The Zanzibar Athletics Association (ZAA) is intensifying its efforts to ensure that athletes from Zanzibar secure opportunities to compete in major international events, including the Commonwealth Games and the Olympic Games.

Speaking to The Respondent Online, ZAA Vice President Makame Ali said that achieving this goal requires athletes who meet international standards.

“Our focus is currently on developing young athletes, who are the foundation of future success,” Ali explained. “We aim to have competitors ready to represent Zanzibar on the global stage.”

He added that regular local competitions offer young athletes the chance to showcase their talent, gain experience, and improve their competitiveness.

Next year, ZAA plans to organize several key events, including the Revolution Cup, U-18 and U-20 youth tournaments, as well as regional and district-level competitions. Athletes from mainland Tanzania are also expected to participate.

“These competitions will help evaluate our athletes’ performance and prepare them for major international platforms,” Ali noted, stressing that such exposure is vital for long-term success.
