The Tanzania Railways Corporation (TRC) is progressing with land acquisition activities to facilitate the construction of the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) for the sixth section, spanning Tabora to Kigoma in Uvinza District, Kigoma Region.

The exercise, essential for preparing the main route of the SGR project, involves the relocation of graves in six villages, including Nyangabo, Chakulu, Bweru, Malagarasi, Nguruka, and Mpeta.

Project engineer Mr. Benedict Mashimbi explained that the land acquisition will cover the segment between kilometer 195 and kilometer 250 of the Tabora–Kigoma stretch.

He emphasized that the process is being conducted in accordance with established procedures and guidelines, with TRC collaborating with multiple leadership levels, including the Regional Commissioner’s office, the District Commissioner, Uvinza District Council offices, health officials, religious leaders, and village authorities.

“We have ensured continuous engagement with residents, particularly those directly affected, to provide them with understanding of the procedures and guidelines, aiming for a smooth process without any disruptions,” Mr. Mashimbi stated.

Environmental health officer from Uvinza District Council, Mr. Hussein Katelanya, highlighted that the exercise is being carried out professionally to prevent the spread of infections and disease outbreaks. He noted that protective equipment, including medicines, masks, gloves, overalls, and boots, is being used.

“Our main responsibility is to ensure quality and safety standards are maintained, follow all protocols related to burial practices, prevent infections, and avoid disease outbreaks,” Mr. Katelanya explained.

Acting Village Executive Officer of Mpeta, Mr. Jelas Balegele, noted that residents are hopeful to benefit from employment opportunities offered through the SGR project via village leadership coordination.

Residents have continued to provide significant cooperation in the land acquisition process, facilitating the SGR construction along this key segment from Tabora to Kigoma.
