The Tanzania Revenue Authority (TRA) on December 16, 2025 intercepted a large consignment of smuggled cooking oil at Kunduchi Port in Dar es Salaam, seizing 18,000 drums that had been brought into the country in violation of established procedures.

Speaking after the operation, TRA Commissioner General Yusuph Juma Mwenda said the seizure was part of ongoing efforts to protect the national economy from illegal trade, which deprives the government of vital revenue and weakens the growth of local industries.

He noted that smuggling creates unfair competition for domestic manufacturers who operate within the law and meet tax obligations.

Mr Mwenda also cautioned that products which evade inspection by relevant authorities may pose serious health risks to consumers, as their quality and safety cannot be guaranteed. He stressed that protecting the public from such risks is a shared responsibility.

TRA reaffirmed its commitment to taking firm action against individuals and networks involved in smuggling, while calling on citizens to cooperate by reporting suspicious activities.

The authority said public support is crucial in safeguarding government revenue, promoting fair trade, and protecting the health and welfare of consumers.
