The Tanzania Shipping Agency Corporation (TASAC) has issued a strict warning to marine transport operators and vessel owners who flout safety license regulations, urging them to immediately stop practices that endanger passengers, particularly during the festive season.
The warning came during a visit to Nyamisati Port in Kibiti District, where TASAC Senior Inspector Engineer Christopher Mlelwa highlighted a growing trend of vessels operating beyond their licensed routes.
Engineer Mlelwa noted that some vessels authorized to serve nearby islands have been illegally crossing to Mafia Island without proper clearance, putting passengers and cargo at serious risk.
“Some operators are using unofficial routes and conducting trips without following required procedures. Anyone caught violating the rules will face strict legal action. Vessel owners intending to operate between Nyamisati and Mafia must apply for official licenses to ensure their vessels are properly inspected and certified,” he said.
Nyamisati Port Safety Officer from the Tanzania Ports Authority (TPA), Mr. Shaibu Salum, confirmed that vessels undergo thorough inspections before departure but said challenges arise when some operators change their routes at sea.

The Captains’ Association, represented by Chairman Saidi Kirobo and Captain Abdulrahmani Iddi, admitted that some operators disregard maritime safety laws and expressed support for TASAC’s efforts to strengthen inspections and impose penalties to protect passengers.
TASAC emphasized that it will continue raising awareness on maritime safety and intensifying patrols across all marine transport routes in the country.
