The Regional Commissioner (RC) of Dar es Salaam, Albert Chalamila, has called on the Dar es Salaam Water and Sewerage Authority (DAWASA) to develop sustainable strategies to tackle the city’s persistent water shortages, particularly affecting the Ruvu River during prolonged dry seasons.
RC Chalamila said the recurring water scarcity in major sources like the Ruvu River requires urgent and long-term planning by experts and officials.
“DAWASA has the responsibility to design water projects that ensure uninterrupted supply even during periods of scarcity, meeting the growing demand of Dar es Salaam residents,” he stated.
He urged the authority to focus on rehabilitating existing water wells to increase water availability and reduce complaints from residents affected by shortages.
Speaking on behalf of the authority, DAWASA Board Chairman Eng. Romanus Mwangingo said the directives have been received and that efforts are ongoing to ensure fair water distribution across the city.
“Various initiatives are in progress, including restoring existing wells to boost supply and mitigate the effects of water shortages for residents,” Eng. Mwangingo explained.
Meanwhile, Director of the Wami-Ruvu Basin, Eng. Elibariki Mmasi, attributed the challenge to climate change, which has affected water sources across the region.
“Several measures have been taken, including suspending permits for irrigation schemes during this dry season to conserve water and ensure adequate supply,” he said.
