The Government is prioritizing local processing of minerals to drive economic growth, increase revenue, create jobs, and strengthen Tanzania’s mining sector.
This was emphasized by Eng. Yahya Samamba, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Minerals, during a briefing with staff of the Minerals Commission – Arusha Regional Mining Office and the Tanzania Gemological Centre (TGC) in Arusha.
Eng. Samamba said the Government expects minerals mined in Tanzania to undergo value addition before export, a move that will boost revenue, promote local industries, and expand employment opportunities.
“President Samia Suluhu Hassan has directed that value addition and beneficiation must happen within the country. These are resources we are richly blessed with, and they must contribute fully to the national economy,” he said.
He highlighted that small-scale miners remain a crucial pillar of the sector, contributing significantly to production and revenue collection.
The Government will continue creating supportive environments that help them increase efficiency, productivity, and overall economic contribution.
Eng. Samamba also urged staff to uphold professionalism, integrity, and client-focused service delivery. He condemned corruption and unprofessional behavior, stressing that respectful communication with clients reflects accountability and builds a positive image for the Government.
“Quality service, zero corruption, and respectful engagement are the foundations of successful institutions and a thriving sector,” he said.
The Permanent Secretary called on all staff to work with dedication, innovation, and patriotism to ensure that the mining sector remains a key driver of sustainable development and inclusive economic growth.
On the progress of TGC, Coordinator Eng. Ally Maganga said the construction of the Centre’s new eight-story building has reached 10 percent.
The facility is part of the Government’s strategy to enhance research, training, and value addition in Tanzania’s gemstone sector.
Arusha Regional Mining Officer Francis Mihayo said the region is closely implementing Government directives, overseeing mining, processing, and trading activities.
He added that the office will continue working with small-scale miners, investors, and Government agencies to ensure a conducive investment environment, legal compliance, and increased contribution of mining to regional and national development.
