Simbachawene warns against social media falsehoods, urges moral responsibility

By Our Reporter

Minister for Home Affairs George Simbachawene has warned that the growing spread of injustice, lies and selfish interests through social media poses a serious threat to Tanzania’s social harmony and moral fabric, calling on citizens to exercise restraint and responsibility in their online engagement.

Speaking during a Christmas service held at Pwaga Parish in Mpwapwa District, Dodoma Region, Simbachawene said digital platforms, while powerful tools for communication, are increasingly being misused to promote misinformation and divisive narratives that undermine trust and national unity.

He stressed that such tendencies, if left unchecked, weaken shared values and erode the foundations of peaceful coexistence.

The minister urged Tanzanians to be guided by truth, justice and empathy, particularly at a time when social media influence continues to shape public opinion and behaviour.

He noted that responsible use of these platforms is essential in safeguarding peace and strengthening collective accountability.

During the service, the parish priest, Father Daniel Kijaji, offered prayers for Simbachawene, asking for wisdom and sound judgement as he carries out the responsibilities entrusted to him by President Samia Suluhu Hassan to lead the Ministry of Home Affairs.

Father Kijaji also acknowledged the minister’s Sh10 million contribution towards the construction of the parish church, describing it as a gesture that reflects commitment to community development and faith institutions.

Simbachawene said religious institutions remain key partners in promoting ethical leadership, social discipline and unity, adding that collaboration between the state and faith-based organisations is critical in addressing moral and social challenges facing the country.
