The President of Zanzibar and Chairman of the Revolutionary Council, Dr. Hussein Ali Mwinyi, has reiterated the Government’s commitment to implementing deliberate and strategic measures aimed at addressing the challenges faced by Persons with Disabilities in the country.
Speaking at the commemoration of the International Day of Persons with Disabilities, held at the Dr. Ali Mohamed Shein Hall in Tunguu, President Mwinyi stated that the Government will continue prioritizing participation, access to rights, and inclusion for Persons with Disabilities.
He emphasized that no individual should be left behind in social, political, or leadership opportunities.
President Mwinyi also affirmed continued cooperation between the Government, the Federation of Associations of Persons with Disabilities, and the National Council for Persons with Disabilities.
This collaboration aims to conduct comprehensive assessments and develop sustainable solutions for issues affecting Persons with Disabilities.
Referring to the recent General Election, President Mwinyi commended the strong turnout of Persons with Disabilities, noting their active involvement in exercising their constitutional right to vote.
The President highlighted ongoing Government efforts to enhance access to essential services—such as education, healthcare, public offices, and infrastructure by ensuring that development projects take into account the needs of Persons with Disabilities.
As part of these initiatives, the Government has constructed two specialized schools for students with disabilities: one in South Unguja and another in North Pemba. Plans are underway to establish an additional specialized school in Central Unguja.
President Mwinyi concluded by emphasizing the Government’s commitment to advancing inclusive development and improving conditions for Persons with Disabilities throughout the country.
