Police appeal for national unity as online calls for December 9 protests raise fears of disruption

By The Respondents Reporter

The Tanzania Police Force has called on citizens to stand together in safeguarding national unity and essential services as online messages urging people to join December 9 protests continue to circulate.

Authorities say the calls are unlawful and could destabilise key sectors that millions of Tanzanians rely on.

In a statement released from Police Headquarters in Dodoma, the Force highlighted that the current online mobilisation appears designed to disrupt transport, trade and medical services areas that directly affect ordinary citizens.

The Police emphasised that safeguarding these services is a shared responsibility, especially as the country approaches a busy festive season.

According to the statement, some of the messages circulating on social media encourage people to shut down roads, border points and the Port of Dar es Salaam.

Police say such actions would threaten the movement of food, medicine and essential goods, affecting families and businesses across the nation.

The Force described these instructions as reckless and harmful to the public, warning that interference with hospitals would place vulnerable patients at even greater risk.

Authorities also noted that some online groups are urging young people to participate in actions that could endanger their future including seizing property or confronting security officers.

The Police urged parents, guardians and community leaders to counsel youth against following instructions from anonymous online accounts whose intent remains unclear.

The statement raised concerns about organisers proposing protests “with no endpoint,” warning that such a scenario could lead to economic losses, safety risks and long-term instability.

The Police stressed that genuine civic rights must be exercised responsibly and within legal procedures not through actions that disrupt livelihoods and undermine social harmony.

Reflecting on the incidents of October 29 and the days that followed, the Police reminded citizens of the losses experienced, including damage to property and interruptions to daily life.

They urged Tanzanians not to allow such disruptions to recur, especially during a period when families are preparing for end-of-year activities, travel and economic engagements.

As part of ongoing preparations for the festive season, the Police assured the public that coordinated security operations are underway nationwide to maintain peace and mitigate road accidents.

The Force reaffirmed its commitment to protecting every citizen, supporting business activities and ensuring that families continue with their routines safely.

The Police encouraged Tanzanians to verify information through official sources and avoid rumours that create fear or tension.

They urged the public to prioritise peace, national unity and the protection of essential services that sustain communities.

In closing, the Force reaffirmed that Tanzania’s stability is a collective achievement and must be protected by all.

They assured the public that security agencies will continue working together to maintain calm and support the nation as it moves toward the end of the year.
