Morogoro Regional Police are investigating an incident in Lusanga Village, Mvomero District, where two vehicles were set on fire following the death of 18-year-old domestic worker, Mwanahasan Juma Hamis.
According to Morogoro Regional Police Commander Alex Mkama, the incident occurred on December 17, 2025, after the deceased’s body was transported from Dar es Salaam to her home village for burial.
Mwanahasan had been employed by Miraji Chomoka in Dar es Salaam and reportedly died after a brief illness.
Commander Mkama explained that the vehicles involved had been used to transport the body. Tension arose while burial arrangements were underway, after relatives of the deceased raised concerns about the circumstances surrounding her death.
“The dispute started after family members questioned the condition of the body, which angered some local residents who had gathered at the funeral,” Commander Mkama said.
The unrest escalated when mourners were reportedly locked inside a house and the vehicles they arrived in were set ablaze, as community members demanded further explanations.
Police, working closely with local government leaders, were able to safely evacuate the mourners.
Investigations are ongoing to determine the exact circumstances of the death and to verify claims regarding medical procedures carried out on the body before it was transported.
Police have urged the public to remain calm, avoid taking the law into their own hands, and wait for the outcome of the investigation. Security in the area has been strengthened to prevent further incidents.
Morogoro Regional Referral Hospital Secretary, Scholastica Ndunga, confirmed that the hospital received the body and that medical examinations had been conducted. She added that the police are responsible for releasing the final findings.
“The medical examination is complete, and the results will be communicated by the police,” she said.
