Prime Minister Dr. Mwigulu Lameck Nchemba has directed the construction of a four-lane road in Tunduma to reduce traffic congestion and boost trade efficiency at the Tanzania-Zambia border.
Speaking during an inspection tour of infrastructure in Songwe Region, Dr. Mwigulu called on all government institutions to work together to ensure the project begins immediately.
He said the upgrade will enhance the main SADC border post’s efficiency, attracting more transporters and improving cross-border trade.
“Good infrastructure strengthens services, maintains peace and order, and boosts both the people’s and the nation’s economy,” he said.
Deputy Minister for Works, Eng. Godfrey Kasekenya, said the Tanzania National Roads Agency (TANROADS) has already started preparations to expand a 700-meter section into a four-lane road.
Eng. Kasekenya added that another measure to ease congestion is the construction of weighbridges at Iboya to monitor vehicles entering Tunduma, complementing the Mpemba weighbridge that checks trucks traveling from Mbeya.
He assured the Prime Minister that challenges at the Mpemba weighbridge have been resolved, and it is now fully operational.
Dr. Mwigulu is visiting Songwe and Mbeya regions to assess infrastructure development and ensure smooth implementation of ongoing projects.
