Zanzibar Port has seen a major boost in efficiency after the Tanzania Revenue Authority (TRA) installed a modern container scanner.
During a visit to the port on December 17, 2025, TRA Commissioner General, Mr. Yusuph Juma Mwenda, observed the positive impact of the new technology.
According to the Director General of Zanzibar Ports Corporation, Mr. Akif Ali Khamis, inspecting a single container previously took three to five hours. With the new scanner, up to 100 containers can now be checked in just one hour.
“The increase in cargo throughput has not only raised port revenue but also tax collections. We sincerely thank TRA for installing this scanner at Zanzibar Port,” Mr. Khamis said.
Mr. Mwenda said the scanner has strengthened national security by revealing container contents and preventing potential risks.
He added that faster inspections have made trade smoother and are expected to further increase tax collections.
He stressed that TRA continues to broaden the tax base by facilitating business and encouraging voluntary tax compliance.
