Kinyerezi extension boosts reliable power supply for Dar es Salaam

Tanzania has recorded another major milestone in strengthening its electricity infrastructure, following the completion of the expansion of the Kinyerezi I Extension Power Receiving and Switching Substation.

Deputy Minister for Energy, Salome Makamba, announced that the project is now fully complete, including the installation of a modern 175 MVA transformer, a development expected to significantly improve power reliability in rapidly growing areas such as Mbagala and Gongo la Mboto.

Hon. Makamba made the announcement during a working tour of the Kinyerezi and Ubungo power generation facilities, where she underscored the government’s commitment to delivering stable electricity to all Tanzanians.

“This is a key achievement for our country. We deeply appreciate President Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan for her continued investment in the energy sector. With the transformers now installed and testing underway, residents of Gongo la Mboto and Mbagala can expect more dependable electricity,” she said.

According to TANESCO Managing Director, Mr. Lazaro Twange, the expansion project is part of wider efforts to modernize the national power grid and respond to the steady rise in electricity demand driven by population growth and economic activities in Dar es Salaam.

He explained that in addition to the 175 MVA transformer installed at Kinyerezi, a 120 MVA transformer has been placed to reinforce supply to Mbagala and Gongo la Mboto—areas that have long experienced strain on the existing power network.

“Dar es Salaam is expanding rapidly, and our infrastructure must expand with it. The goal of the Kinyerezi I Extension is to increase the capacity and efficiency of power transmission so that the electricity we generate reaches customers reliably and at the required standards,” Mr. Twange said.

The completion of the Kinyerezi I Extension stands as a testament to ongoing government reforms and investments aimed at ensuring stable, modern, and future-ready electricity infrastructure—supporting both community needs and national economic growth.
