The Government of Tanzania has reaffirmed its commitment to creating a favorable environment for investment in communication services, as part of its drive to expand digital access nationwide.
Speaking during a visit to YAS Tanzania’s headquarters in Dar es Salaam, Minister of Communication and Information Technology, Angellah Jasmine Mbelwa Kairuki (MP), praised the company for its key role in advancing the country’s digital transformation.
She highlighted YAS’s contributions in expanding financial transactions, improving rural connectivity, investing in communication infrastructure, and creating employment for Tanzanians.
Over the past three years, YAS has invested USD 47.6 million in the National Information and Communication Technology Backbone (NICTBB), collaborating with the government to construct 560 communication towers and ensuring timely project completion, Minister Kairuki said.
The Minister emphasized that the company has a responsibility to connect all citizens to communication services, particularly those in rural areas, ensuring inclusivity for women, persons with disabilities, and other marginalized groups.
She encouraged YAS to further invest in digital financial services while safeguarding customer privacy and information security.
Minister Kairuki also urged the company to continue educating communities about its services and to enhance employee capacity through regular training to keep up with technological advancements.
YAS has trained nearly 9,000 young Tanzanians, and the Minister called on the company to intensify efforts to empower youth especially girls with ICT skills.
“We will continue building an enabling environment so that you can witness the positive impact of your youth empowerment initiatives,” she said.
The Minister reiterated that the government will continue to provide policies and frameworks that allow companies like YAS to grow commercially, protect user interests, and contribute to national economic development.
She further noted that the government is open to partnering with the company to invest in strategic areas, including tourism destinations such as islands and underserved regions.
Minister Kairuki concluded by thanking YAS Tanzania for its collaboration, stressing that continued partnership will help build an inclusive society with secure, modern, and competitive communication services, driving Tanzania’s digital development forward.
