Malinyi and Ulanga chosen for Cashew cultivation to boost local economy

By Lilian Kasenene, Morogoro

Morogoro Regional Commissioner, Adam Malima, has unveiled a new strategy to promote cashew cultivation in the region, selecting Malinyi and Ulanga districts as key areas for its expansion. The move aims to enhance household incomes and drive economic growth for local communities.

Speaking at the Regional Consultative Committee (RCC) meeting held at Morogoro Teachers’ College, Malima said the region continues to prioritize crops that improve livelihoods and protect the environment, while also introducing new high-potential crops.

Cashew, he said, is now a strategic crop for Morogoro and will play a crucial role in boosting the local and national economy.

“We have agreed that cashew is a new strategic crop for Morogoro. While we have several important crops, cashew stands out. I recommended Malinyi and Ulanga as the districts to lead this initiative,” Malima said.

The Regional Commissioner also called on Morogoro Municipal Mayor Khalid Matengo to ensure efficient revenue collection, which is key to improving the council’s performance and its bid to attain city status.

Malima further urged district chairpersons to work collaboratively and focus on their duties, warning against distractions and rumours that could undermine development efforts.

He also expressed concern over the poor attendance of some Members of Parliament at consultative meetings, which are critical for discussing development plans.

“Some MPs have been absent from district and regional consultative sessions where development is discussed,” he noted.

Malinyi MP Mecktridis Mdaku said the district is promoting strategic crops, including cashew, peanuts, and cocoa.

“In Malinyi, we have strongly encouraged farmers to grow cashew. While only a few have started, others are still focused on rice. We need to continue educating them that cashew is also a profitable crop,” Mdaku said, adding that expanding cashew farming could help residents overcome poverty and strengthen the district’s economy.
