Community health workers in Ilemela Municipality have received intensive on-the-job training aimed at improving child nutrition and overall health services at the community level.
The training focused on proper nutrition, the importance of vitamin A, and deworming for children under five.
The initiative, led by the Municipal Nutrition Officer, Pili Kassim, seeks to strengthen the capacity of health workers so they can deliver effective nutrition services in their neighborhoods.
“The main goal is to empower health workers and enhance their efficiency, ensuring nutrition services improve at all our service points,” Kassim said.
Lukona Petro Nangulo, a community health worker from Kahama Ward, said the training enabled him to accurately use mid-upper arm circumference (MUAC) tapes and weigh children to assess their nutritional status.
“I will apply today’s lessons by screening children, identifying those with stunted growth, and advising mothers on nutritious meals. Children who continue to show growth issues will be referred to health facilities,” he said.
Angelina Doto Sulyu, a community health worker from Kayenze Ward, praised the training for expanding their knowledge on child nutrition.
She urged mothers to bring their children to health centers for essential nutrition services and education rather than keeping them at home.
The training is part of ongoing efforts by Ilemela Municipality to ensure that children grow healthy and strong, equipped with the immunity and resilience needed to thrive.
