The government has highlighted the critical role of border security and revenue collection in supporting Tanzania’s development during an inspection tour at the Mutukula One Stop Border Post (OSBP) in Misenyi District, Kagera Region, which connects Tanzania and Uganda.
Minister for Home Affairs, George Simbachawene, stressed that ensuring national security and efficient revenue collection at borders is essential for funding development projects that directly benefit citizens. He was accompanied by the Kagera Regional Defence and Security Committee.
Upon his arrival, Minister Simbachawene received a security briefing from Kagera Regional Commissioner, Hajjat Fatma Mwassa, which identified challenges such as illegal entry points exploited by unauthorized migrants and potential security threats.
“Security comes first. Every officer here must prioritise the safety of our nation. Equally important is revenue collection, which enables the government to fund health services, infrastructure, education, and agriculture,” Minister Simbachawene said.
“Borders like Mutukula are crucial revenue points. Efficient collection here ensures that resources reach citizens through development projects.”he added
During the visit, Officer in Charge of the Mutukula Immigration Station, Senior Immigration Officer Sarah Ngonyani, highlighted efforts to manage the border effectively.
She confirmed that authorities are intercepting illegal migrants in areas such as Kanyigo and Minziro while continuing to provide essential immigration services.
Ms Ngonyani added that from January to November 2025, a total of 44,486 visitors entered Tanzania through Mutukula, while 24,730 exited, generating approximately TZS 158,680,000 in visa fees.
She also noted the ongoing “Know Your Neighbour” public awareness campaign, which helps communities identify and report irregular migration activities.
Edmund Lubinza from the Tanzania Revenue Authority (TRA) revealed that Mutukula generates about TZS 9 billion monthly.
Between July and November, the border post achieved 95 per cent of its revenue target, collecting TZS 27 billion out of the TZS 29 billion goal, thanks to strong institutional collaboration.
Minister Simbachawene commended border officers for their dedication and urged continued coordination to safeguard the nation while maximising revenue collection for the benefit of Tanzanian citizens.
