Gamondi recalls Mwalimu to Taifa Stars ahead of AFCON 2025

By Flora Mkoloma

Taifa Stars head coach Miguel Gamondi has recalled striker Selemani Mwalimu to the national team squad as preparations intensify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) to be staged in Morocco.

Mwalimu has been drafted into the squad to replace forward Abdul Selemani, popularly known as “Sopu,” and will immediately join the team in camp ahead of the continental tournament.

The striker was part of the provisional squad named earlier by the technical bench but was dropped during the final selection that narrowed the team to 28 players.

His return follows a comprehensive assessment by the technical team, which reviewed the squad’s requirements as well as Mwalimu’s recent form and match fitness.

The decision is expected to strengthen competition within the team and provide additional attacking options as Taifa Stars fine-tune preparations for the tournament.

Taifa Stars are currently in camp ahead of their departure to Morocco, where Africa’s top national teams will compete for continental honours at AFCON 2025.
