Tanzanian boxing sensation, Faru Faki Issa Faki, widely known as Faru Weusi, concluded his historic run at the World Boxing Championships after a hard-fought points loss to Kazakhstan’s Saken Bibbosinov in the Round of 16.
The 22-year-old Tanzanian showcased remarkable skill and resilience against Bibbosinov, the world’s No. 7 ranked boxer in the 54kg Bantamweight division, representing a country renowned for its rich boxing history.
Although Faki fell short of advancing to the quarter-finals, his performance shattered a 51-year-old national record, marking the first time a Tanzanian boxer had won a bout at the World Championships since Emmanuel Mlundwa defeated Puerto Rico’s Alfredo Pereira in Havana, Cuba, in 1974.
The loss also meant Faki narrowly missed out on the TZS 25 million prize awarded to boxers who reach the quarter-finals.
Nevertheless, his determination and historic achievement have ignited renewed hope for Tanzanian boxing.
Speaking to The Respondents Online, Lukelo Willilo, President of the Tanzania Boxing Federation (BFT), expressed pride in Faki’s performance.
“We thank God for the progress we have achieved. Tanzania has succeeded in rewriting history after more than five decades. Though we did not reach our ultimate goal, we remain determined to build on this achievement, aiming for medals at future World Championships,” Willilo said.
Faki’s breakthrough has not only energized the nation’s boxing community but also positioned him as a symbol of Tanzania’s growing potential on the international stage, inspiring young athletes across the country.
