The efficiency of Tanzania Ports Authority (TPA) facilities has surged, with Dar es Salaam Port recording an unprecedented 36 percent increase in cargo throughput this year. This growth marks the fastest expansion since the port’s establishment.
Deputy Minister of Transport, David Kihenzile, said the improvement reflected in over 34 million tons of cargo handled across seaports and Great Lakes ports is the result of substantial government investment under the leadership of President Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan.
“The expansion projects at Dar es Salaam, Tanga, and Mtwara ports, ongoing construction at Kisiwa Mgao and Bagamoyo ports, upgrades at Great Lakes ports, and the adoption of modern equipment and ICT systems have all contributed to this growth,” he said during the opening of the 18th Transport Sector Performance Evaluation Conference at the Arusha International Conference Centre (AICC).
Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Transport, Prof. Godius Kahyarara, described the 36 percent annual growth rate as exceptional, stressing that competition among ports encourages higher efficiency and attracts more investment.
The conference is accompanied by an exhibition at AICC, where institutions under the Ministry of Transport are showcasing innovations and services that support Tanzania’s growing transport sector.
