The Minister of Livestock and Fisheries, Ambassador Dr. Bashiru Ally Kakurwa, has called on authorities under his ministry to actively engage both local and foreign private sector players to strengthen the fisheries industry.
Dr. Bashiru made the remarks during a visit to the Tanzania Fisheries Corporation (TAFICO) offices in Dar es Salaam, stressing that local private companies should be involved in areas where they can contribute to the ongoing revival of the corporation’s operations.
“We cannot entirely avoid foreign private sector involvement because of their experience, technology, capital, and access to international markets. The fisheries industry is vast, and even with growing domestic demand, local markets alone will not suffice,” Dr. Bashiru said.
Deputy Minister Ng’wasi Kamani encouraged young people outside formal employment to seize opportunities within the sector, particularly those emerging from TAFICO’s renewed activities.
“I am delighted to see young people who have already taken advantage of opportunities in the fisheries sector and secured employment. I urge them to act as ambassadors to their peers, sharing information about these opportunities. This reflects the President’s vision to ensure youth benefit from productive sectors,” Deputy Minister Kamani said.
The ministers are expected to continue their visit to the Tanzania Veterinary Laboratory Agency (TVLA) and the Marine Parks and Reserves Unit (MPRU) later today.
