Minister for Water Jumaa Aweso on December 16, 2025, accompanied by Dar es Salaam Regional Commissioner Albert Chalamila and his counterparts from Coast and Morogoro regions, conducted an inspection tour of the Kidunda Dam project to assess the status of its construction.
The high-level delegation was informed that construction of the modern mega water dam has reached 40 per cent completion.
The project is expected to provide a long-term solution to chronic water shortages affecting Dar es Salaam and Coast regions, particularly during the dry season.
The Kidunda Dam is among the flagship water projects initiated following a decisive directive by President Samia Suluhu Hassan, aimed at ensuring sustainable access to clean and safe water for urban and peri-urban populations.
The project underscores the government’s commitment to strengthening water security as a foundation for social welfare and economic growth.
Addressing officials at the site, Minister Aweso said the government, through the Ministry of Water, continues to implement strategic and future-oriented investments in the water sector to guarantee reliable supply throughout the year.
He noted that the Kidunda Dam, located in Morogoro Region, forms part of a comprehensive national plan to eliminate recurring water shortages and enhance resilience against climate-related challenges.
Beyond water supply, the dam will also support the energy sector. Once completed, it is expected to generate about 20 megawatts of hydropower, which will be fed into the national electricity grid.
The Kidunda Dam project is scheduled for completion in early 2026 and is anticipated to play a critical role in improving water availability, supporting industrial growth, and enhancing the quality of life for residents of Dar es Salaam, Coast and surrounding regions.
