President of Zanzibar and Chairman of the Revolutionary Council, Dr. Hussein Ali Mwinyi, has visited the Zanzibar Sports City project in Fumba, West Urban District, to review progress as part of preparations for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
During the inspection, President Mwinyi assured the Ministry of Information, Arts, Culture, and Sports and the implementing company, ORKUN GROUP, that the government is fully committed to ensuring the project proceeds quickly, efficiently, and to international standards.
He urged officials and contractors to report challenges promptly so solutions can be provided without delay.
President Mwinyi was joined by the Minister of Information, Arts, Culture, and Sports,Riziki Pemba Juma, and Deputy Minister Ali Abdulgullam Hussein.
The Zanzibar Sports City is a key government initiative aimed at enhancing sports infrastructure and promoting the growth of the sector.
The first phase includes a 36,500-seat international football stadium and two training grounds with a capacity of 15,000 each. One of the grounds will also host national events and celebrations.
Construction is expected to be completed by December 2026, ensuring Zanzibar is ready to host AFCON 2027 matches and related activities.
