Two residents of Msongozi village, Doma ward, Mvomero District, have died, and eight others narrowly escaped after consuming wild potatoes, locally known as vigonzo, that were later found to be poisonous.
Village Chairman Salehe Saidi said the tragedy unfolded on November 12, 2025. According to him, on November 11, Rajabu Ramadhani went to his farm to harvest vigonzo but accidentally dug up a poisonous plant resembling the wild potatoes.
He cooked the harvest and shared it with neighbors, including Samweli Kisira.
Shortly after the meal, the victims began vomiting. Ramadhani was rushed to Morogoro Regional Referral Hospital, where he later died. Samweli Kisira also passed away at his home on the same day. Both have since been buried in Doma.
Those who survived the poisoning include the child of the late Keila Mohamed, Twahami Amiri, Said Omari, Samia Mwinyimvua, Nasri Doto, Imlagi Said, Jumanne Salumu, and Blaina Joseph.
Dr. Nafsa Marombwa, who was on duty when Ramadhani was admitted, confirmed the patient received treatment but died despite medical attention. Preliminary investigations indicate he ingested a toxic substance, and further tests are ongoing.
Authorities are now urging communities to exercise caution when harvesting or consuming wild plants. “Even plants that look familiar can be dangerous if their safety is not verified,” said Chairman Saidi.
This incident highlights the hidden risks of wild plants and underscores the need for increased public awareness and education on food safety, particularly in rural areas.
