Tanzania marks national nutrition week to promote healthy diets

The Ministry of Health has announced the 2025 National Nutrition Week, set to run from November 17 to 21 across mainland Tanzania, with national celebrations taking place in Ruvuma Region.

The annual event, usually held on October 29 or 30, aims to raise public awareness on the importance of proper nutrition and the social and economic impacts of malnutrition.

This year’s theme, “Health is Your Wealth: Mind What You Eat,” emphasizes the role of balanced diets in building healthy communities, a strong workforce, and overall economic and social well-being.

The Ministry highlighted that good nutrition is crucial for physical and mental growth, preventing non-communicable diseases such as diabetes, hypertension, cardiovascular ailments, and stroke, as well as combating stunting in children under five.

“The government encourages citizens to include a variety of foods available locally in their daily diets, particularly vegetables, fruits, protein-rich foods of animal origin, and fortified foods to improve nutrition and health,” the Ministry said in a statement.

Officials also urged Tanzanians to reduce consumption of foods high in fat, sugar, and salt, while engaging in regular physical activity to maintain healthy body weight and prevent lifestyle-related diseases.

The Ministry called on all sectors, including religious and community leaders, educational institutions, private companies, civil society organizations, media outlets, and development partners, to actively support the campaign and promote nutrition awareness in families and communities.

Health professionals are urged to continue educating and guiding the public on the importance of proper nutrition.

“Let us all work together to ensure every Tanzanian has access to accurate nutrition information and quality services to build a healthy society, a productive workforce, and sustainable social and economic development,” the Ministry concluded.
