Tanzania appoints special female councillors for 2025 general election

By The Respondents Reporter

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has officially appointed women to special councillor seats ahead of the 2025 General Election, reinforcing efforts to boost female representation in local governance.

The appointments were made under the provisions of the Local Government Act, the Local Authorities Act, and the Presidential and Parliamentary Elections Act, with a total of 1,385 women designated to occupy special seats in local councils across the country.

The decision aims to ensure that women play a stronger role in shaping local development and governance.

Two additional special seats were filled following repeat elections in Mindu and Chamwino wards, necessitated by the deaths of some candidates during the initial election period.

Similar procedures were followed in Morogoro Municipal Council’s Mzingwa ward, where elections were delayed due to candidate fatalities.

The appointments span multiple political parties that succeeded in securing women for special seats. INEC has communicated the final list of councillors to the respective party offices and all Regional Electoral Officers across mainland Tanzania.

INEC stressed that these appointments are part of ongoing national efforts to promote gender equality in governance and ensure that women’s voices are well represented in decision-making processes at the local level.
