The Minister of Energy, Deogratius Ndejembi, has praised the Rural Energy Agency (REA) for its outstanding work in bringing electricity to villages and peri-urban areas, a move that has significantly boosted local economic activities.

Speaking on November 28, 2025, during a meeting with the Rural Energy Board (REB) and REA management at the agency’s Dodoma headquarters, Minister Ndejembi highlighted the achievements of rural and hamlet electrification projects, as well as initiatives to promote clean cooking energy.

“REA has done tremendous work across the country, especially in rural and peri-urban areas. I sincerely commend the REA Board, management, and staff for ensuring that electricity reaches every village in Tanzania,” said Minister Ndejembi.

He noted that rural electrification was once seen as a distant dream, but today all villages have access to electricity, thanks to REA’s consistent efforts.

The Minister also commended the agency for collaborating closely with other stakeholders, including TANESCO, which has been instrumental in supporting rural electrification.

Deputy Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Energy, Dr. James Matarajio, said REA ensures that rural communities have reliable and clean electricity, enabling productive activities that contribute to economic growth.

REB Chairman, Retired Major General and Ambassador Jacob Kingu, assured Minister Ndejembi of the board’s full support in implementing ongoing and future rural electrification projects.

REA Director General, Mr. Hassan Saidy, reported that all 12,318 villages in the country now have access to electricity.

“So far, 39,003 out of 64,359 hamlets, or 61 percent, have been electrified. Another 2,562 hamlets are under ongoing projects, including Densification 2A, HEP I, HEP IIA, and HEP Lindi,” said Mr. Saidy.

He further revealed that the project to electrify 9,000 hamlets (HEP 2B) will be implemented in all regions over the next three years, initially targeting 290,000 households.

On clean energy, Mr. Saidy said REA continues to promote access to sustainable energy solutions, including natural gas, LPG, innovative cookstoves, and clean energy systems in institutions, benefiting communities in rural and peri-urban areas.
