Prime Minister Dr. Mwigulu Lameck Nchemba has directed all government drivers and officials to strictly follow traffic laws, expressing disappointment that government vehicles are increasingly leading in road safety violations.
Speaking in Dar es Salaam on Wednesday, November 26, 2025, during the closing ceremony of the inaugural Sustainable Land Transport Week, Dr. Nchemba said reports of overspeeding and disregard for road signs by government drivers were unacceptable and undermined public trust.
He urged the Ministry of Transport, together with the Police and other stakeholders, to review traffic laws where necessary, but insisted that no one should ignore the rules simply because they believe the laws are outdated.
“If speed limits, road signs, or any other safety regulations are no longer practical, then let us change them. But we cannot allow people to break the law just because they think it is inconvenient,” Dr. Nchemba said.
The Prime Minister stressed that Tanzania’s roads cannot operate under double standards—one set of rules for citizens and another for government officials.
He warned that when government drivers fail to follow the law, they set a bad example and risk endangering lives.
“There must not be traffic laws for ordinary citizens and separate arrangements for government vehicles. If the laws cause challenges, it is our duty as leaders to speak out and propose improvements,” he added.
Dr. Nchemba’s message emphasized accountability and the need for government institutions to lead by example in promoting safety, discipline, and respect on the nation’s roads.
