President of Zanzibar and Chairman of the Revolutionary Council, Dr Hussein Ali Mwinyi, is expected to officiate the SQF Zanzibar Cleft Marathon, scheduled to take place on December 21 in Zanzibar.
The marathon has been organised by The Same Qualities Foundation (SQF) to support free cleft lip and palate surgeries for children across Tanzania.
The initiative aims to help restore smiles and confidence to children born with the condition, giving them an opportunity to live normal and fulfilling lives.
Speaking to reporters in Dar es Salaam, Josephat Katembo, chairperson of the organising committee, said the event marks the seventh edition of the marathon since SQF was established 11 years ago.
He revealed that the foundation has so far facilitated 2,543 cleft surgeries through special medical camps conducted in different regions of the country.
Participants in the marathon will contribute Sh35,000 as an entry fee, with all proceeds directed towards funding surgeries for children in need.
Katembo noted that the cost of one surgery is approximately Sh800,000, calling on Tanzanians to participate and donate to support the noble cause.
“We urge the public to come out in large numbers to run for a purpose. This is not just a race—it’s an opportunity to change lives and give every Tanzanian child a chance to smile again,” Katembo emphasised.
The SQF Zanzibar Cleft Marathon ambassador, veteran marathoner Juma Ikangaa, highlighted the significance of the event, saying it combines fitness, charity, and social impact.
He said the marathon will feature 5km, 10km, and 21km races, with medals awarded to top performers in recognition of their contribution to the cause.
“These races go beyond competition; they bring people together to support children who deserve a better future,” Ikangaa said.
The upcoming event reinforces Zanzibar’s growing reputation as a hub for sports tourism and charitable initiatives that unite people for social good.
