The Energy and Water Utilities Regulatory Authority (EWURA) has been tasked with strengthening Tanzania’s energy sector to ensure reliable fuel supply, affordable electricity, and increased opportunities for youth.
Deputy Minister for Energy, Salome Makamba, said during a working session with EWURA management that improving fuel transportation and storage is crucial to avoid supply disruptions and protect consumers.
“Efficient fuel movement and adequate storage facilities are key to preventing shortages. While EWURA has made notable progress, more needs to be done to guarantee stability,” she said.
Ms. Makamba also highlighted the need to reduce the cost of household electrical installation materials. She stressed that high costs continue to limit access to electricity, particularly in rural areas, and that making wiring more affordable would allow more households to connect to the national grid.
The Deputy Minister further urged EWURA to open up opportunities for young people through skills development and participation in energy projects.
She said empowering youth is essential to reducing unemployment and building a skilled workforce in the sector.
EWURA Director General Dr. James Andilile said the authority is focused on maintaining high standards of quality, safety, and efficiency among energy service providers, as well as reviewing pricing to ensure fairness.
He added that the regulator is committed to meeting the 100-day priorities set by President Samia Suluhu Hassan.
“Our role is to balance the interests of all stakeholders, promote efficiency and competition, and ensure access to quality services for all,” Dr. Andilile said.
“All regulatory decisions will follow principles of professionalism, transparency, accountability, and the rule of law.”he added
The government’s directives reflect a renewed effort to strengthen energy infrastructure, enhance service delivery, and create sustainable economic opportunities for Tanzanians.
