Tanzania’s Women’s National Football Team, Twiga Stars, has officially qualified for the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) finals, marking a historic moment for women’s football in the country.
The team sealed their place after a hard-fought 1-0 victory against Ethiopia in the second-leg match held today in Ethiopia. With a 3-0 aggregate score—following a 2-0 home win—Twiga Stars demonstrated resilience and determination, securing their place in the continental tournament.
The decisive goal came in the 15th minute, when Diana Lucas expertly converted a precise assist from team captain Opa Clement, giving Tanzania the edge needed to advance.
In the first-leg match on October 22, Twiga Stars had already taken a strong lead with a 2-0 victory, thanks to goals from Asha Mnunka and Jamila Rajabu. This combination of strong home and away performances ensured their smooth passage to the finals.
This qualification comes as a redemption for the team, which narrowly missed out on the 2024 WAFCON after a 4-2 aggregate defeat to Ghana. Today’s victory reflects the team’s progress and growing strength on the continental stage.
The achievement is a milestone for Tanzanian women’s football, offering hope and excitement for fans who have long awaited a strong performance from Twiga Stars in international competitions.
Supporters are optimistic that the team will continue to shine in 2026, showcasing Tanzania’s talent on Africa’s biggest stage for women’s football.
