The Tanzania Government and Health Workers Union (TUGHE) has urged employees across the country to use the forthcoming General Election as an opportunity to elect leaders who will uphold integrity, accountability, and the protection of workers’ rights.
Speaking during the opening of a working session for TUGHE branch chairpersons and secretaries from Dar es Salaam Region in Kibaha, Pwani Region, on Tuesday, TUGHE and Trade Union Congress of Tanzania (TUCTA) Parmanent Secretary Cde.
Hery Mkunda reminded workers that voting is not only a constitutional right but also a powerful tool for shaping the future of labor welfare in the country.
“Workers must take part in choosing leaders who understand their struggles and are ready to stand for them. It is through the ballot that we can ensure our interests are protected and that our voices are heard,” said Cde. Mkunda.
He also commended the Sixth-Phase Government under President Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan for its continued efforts to address public service challenges, including the restoration of staff promotions, adjustments to the minimum wage, and improved maternity leave conditions for mothers delivering premature babies.
However, Cde. Mkunda stressed that union leaders must lead by example by adhering to the TUGHE constitution, which requires regular branch meetings to discuss workers’ concerns and share progress reports.
“Some branches have not been conducting meetings as required, denying members access to vital information and a platform to express their views. Leadership begins with accountability, and as union leaders, we must fulfill our obligations,” he emphasized.
Earlier, Dar es Salaam Regional TUGHE Chairperson Cde. Brendan Maro thanked the Secretary-General for officiating the event, noting that it provided a valuable platform for branch leaders to exchange experiences and strengthen service delivery within their workplaces.
The meeting brought together leaders from various institutions under TUGHE to reflect on performance, leadership discipline, and collective efforts toward improving workers’ welfare nationwide.
