TPDF reaffirms neutrality amid online political provocations

The Tanzania People’s Defence Force (TPDF) has dismissed attempts by individuals using social media platforms to drag the military into political affairs, reaffirming its constitutional mandate to remain neutral.

Acting Director of Information and Public Relations at TPDF Headquarters, Colonel Bernad Masala Mlunga, told journalists in Dar es Salaam on Saturday, October 4, 2025, that the force had detected messages and content designed to provoke political involvement.

He noted that some of these claims were being circulated by individuals with military backgrounds, including people associating themselves with the army as well as former officers who were dismissed for misconduct or for engaging in political activities.

“The TPDF continues to fulfil its constitutional responsibilities with integrity, loyalty, and professionalism, guided by the oath taken by its members,” Colonel Mlunga said, stressing the force’s unwavering commitment to national service.

The clarification came a day after a man identifying himself as Captain John Charles Tesha posted a video on YouTube claiming to be a trainer of military aviation equipment at the Air Defence School (SAK).

In the video, Tesha made political statements regarding Tanzania’s upcoming general election and issued unverified accusations against serving and retired leaders, their families, and close associates.

Colonel Mlunga dismissed such statements as baseless and warned the public against content aimed at undermining the reputation and neutrality of the military.
