The Tanzania Teachers’ Union (TTU) has urged teachers across the country to take a proactive role in educating citizens about their constitutional right to vote, ahead of the General Elections scheduled for October 29.
TTU President Dr. Selemani Ikomba made the appeal during a recent Good Neighbor Meeting of union leaders from the Northern and Central zones, emphasizing that teachers are not only educators but also moral and intellectual leaders in their communities.
“Teachers have a critical responsibility to guide communities in understanding the importance of participating in elections. Their involvement can strengthen democracy and contribute to national development,” Dr. Ikomba said.He noted that teachers’ active engagement in civic education can also influence improvements in the education sector, including better infrastructure, fairer incentives, and improved teaching conditions, by encouraging voters to elect responsive leaders.
Dr. Ikomba urged teachers to use their influence to educate students, parents, and the wider community about the significance of voting, while promoting peace, unity, and patriotism during the electoral process.
TTU underscores that teachers’ role in fostering civic awareness is not just a professional duty but a societal responsibility that helps build informed citizens, strengthens democracy, and drives sustainable national development.
